Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering

The Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering also conducts courses in the Gulmarg area, apart from taking groups out on “adventure courses”, which are basically treks. The institute is not considered one of India’s best, but it’s an option.

IISM is a national institute which has been promoting winter and adventure sports in the Kashmir valley for the last five decades.

Details on 15-day snow ski courses of the Indian Institute of Ski and Mountaineering (IISM) at Gulmarg in 2009:

  • Total courses organized in a year: 5
  • First ski course was held from January 14 to January 27.
  • Second started on January 28 and concluded on February 11.
  • There is a test in which the trainees appear after the end of the course which need to pass to qualify to get certificates.
  • The course stregth is about 40 students of various age groups. Generally there is a huge rush of applicants.
  • The course is three-level, designated as basic, intermediate and advance.
  • Name of some Trainers: Hadeeqa Khurshid, Muhammad Shafi, Tariq Zargar, Feroz Ahmad Khan, Jeelani, Shabir Ahmad Dar
  • Principal: Mr. Khurshid Ahmad Mir
  • Equipment: The institute now sources equipment independent of Tourism department and its own snow scooters, snow beating machines and all the hi-tech gadgets needed for skiing

      The Indian Army’s High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS) at Sonamarg is a premier mountaineering institute, but it’s not usually open to civilians.

      In 2006-2007 Short Snow Ski Courses were reportedly conducted. The courses run for 15 days at Rs.3000/ The course fee includes boarding, lodging and of course training.

      Well i attended the last batch of skiing in march- april 08 in gulmarg conducted by indian institute of skiing and mountenering. The 15 day skiing program was well managed. Makesure that u have proper accmodation. Or pay more and get upgraded into better facility or room. Managment is quite professional but remember this is a schoolin in india and not a pleasure trip. Booz is a big no no in gulmarg as it is a muslim state. Non veg food is not clean, so stick on to vegis. The new facility which is going to start at the end of 09 is awsome. People are very friendly but if u will find lot of cultural diffrence and have to be smart. If u need more info mail me on acro1234@gmail.com

      In March 2009 I am planning a skitrip to India. I really would like to experience how the skiing is in the Himalaya’s; it must be great. Me and my friend are prefering to go to Gulmarg because of the lift which is taking us up to 4.000 meters for great skiing. I read some good stories about the beautiness of Kashmir where Gulmarg is situated. But is it safe to go there at this moment to go there? What can be expected due to negative advice of the Dutch foreign affairs department.

      there are problems in the kashmir valley.but i believe in the
      month of winters (there is relatively no problems)
      i have not heard of problems during the ski time..

Also information about availability of ski lifts; ahat kind of accomodation institute provides; how far are the training slopes from the institute accomodation; how much distraction is there there due to tourists who hang around mainly to their pictures clicked.

      In short any information that can help me take informed decision if it worthwhile to go to Gulmarg for skiing or is it better to hit slopes in Europe.

      We are interested in skiing.
      I Ajay, 45 years
      tow daughters aged 13 and 6 years.
      I and elder daughter has some experince in skiing, so if possible, we can only use services like skies, slopes and chair lifts. Only younger daughter needs a course.

      But, we need accomodation, and other facilities.
      Suitable dates for us are 27th Dec 2010 onwards for a week, and children need to be back in school around 5th Jan 2011.

      this year i opted for Aulli for skiing but the games were going on there and i was not aware of it. slopes were closed for personell ski, so this year 2011 went without skiing. but sure i will have my 2012 at Aulli again with snow skiing. any body gong there can touch me at 9915872786.
